Crooner Dean Martin – Reminiscing With the King of Cool – The Timeless Music of Dean Martin

Everyone loves someone sometimes and that someone is none other than the legendary singer Dean Martin. With a cigarette in hand and a lady by his side, the King of Cool has been serving up his sultry love songs to the world for over four decades.

Dino Paul Crocetti, the son of Italian immigrant parents, rose to the top by literally rolling with the punches. Mocked by his classmates for his broken English and a 15-year-old dropout from Steubenville High School, young Dino got into show business by knocking hard. He boxed as a welterweight with the self-proclaimed title of “Kid Crochet” and during his boxing hayride, Dino received a small cash grab, a broken nose, a split lip and broken knuckles. Among his many other early livelihoods were bootlegging, dealing blackjack for an illegal casino, and being a simple croupier.

Musically influenced by Harry Mills of the Mills Brothers, Dino adopted the same singing style. He teamed up with bandleader Sammy Watkins, who convinced the young singer to change his name to Dean Martin.

A pleasant voice and his natural charm brought Martin several nice concerts in night clubs. However, he did not enjoy the fanatical magnetic pull that singers like Bing Crosby or Frank Sinatra experienced immediately after filming.

His first real break came in 1946 at the Glass Hat Club in New York when he met a young comedian named Jerry Lewis. The two became good friends and began to join forces. The pair would catapult Martin into celebrity status almost overnight. The duo was a comedy singing act, with most of the top picks going to Lewis. Martin served as the straight man of the pair. Although the two embarked on a fast ride to fame that included a schedule of nightclub bookings at all the top clubs across the country along with record and film deals, Martin became increasingly uneasy with reviews of the second billing and eventually the two fell out. . Martin and Lewis broke up and dissolved their personal and professional relationship in 1956. The duo reconciled in a surprise public appearance in 1976 during the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

Solo career for Martin was not easy. His singsong style singing was not so well received as the new rock & roll genre took hold across the country. Struggling to find his unique niche, he focused more on acting than singing. In 1957, Martin made a smart decision. Despite dipping deep into the salary, he signed on for the lead role in the film Young lions alongside headliners Marlon Brando and Montgomery Clift. This was the catalyst that allowed Martin to make his comeback, but this time alone. The film was a box office success and Dean Martin was on his way. With recognition on the big screen, he now had the luxury of cultivating his singing career. He refined his style and vocal technique so that the King of Cool was now more comfortable singing duets with mentors such as Frank Sinatra and Perry Como.

The rebellious Italian-speaking youth of Steubenville, Ohio were now in the big leagues. Dean Martin almost always secured big box office with his name attached to the film, and when his name appeared on the marquee in Las Vegas, the house was sure to be packed.

Martin teamed up with friends Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. and was one of the original members of the famous Rat Pack. However, they themselves did not refer to each other as the Rat Pack, instead referring to their group as “The Summit” or “The Clan”.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Martin enjoyed great success on television with The Dean Martin Show, a variety series that featured many of the top stars of the era. Its light-hearted format was popular with audiences but was sometimes at odds with its producers. Martin did best with adlibs and disliked sticking to a rigid script, which would occasionally make the crew a bit uncomfortable. Later, Martin hosted a celebrity show that featured big name stars like Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart and Lucille Ball.

Dino found his own voice and went on to make legendary hits such as; This is what memories are made of, This is Amoreand Everyone loves someone. His songs are still heard today in movies, TV shows and commercials. Martin’s songs are being downloaded on ITunes by a whole new generation of song lovers.

Dean’s image as a lazy drunk with a continuous smoke in his hand became his public persona. Although never disputed by Martin, there is much speculation that the drinking was in part an act and a media hyped perception. Unfortunately, heavy smoking was very real and in 1993 Martin was diagnosed with lung cancer.

His personal life included three marriages and seven children. Martin’s son Dean Paul (Dino) died in a plane crash in 1987. The tragedy took its toll on the entertainer and subsequently began the decline of his career. His last public performance was in December 1990 at Frank Sinatra’s 75th birthday party. Dean Martin died on Christmas Day 1995 in Beverly Hills, California of acute respiratory failure. He was 78 years old.
